Venue: Coffs Harbour, NSW
Coffs Harbour delivered an outstanding edition of the NSW Masters Road Championships last weekend with 5 of the Dhuez Racing riders in attendance and keen to do well.
NSW Masters Road Race Championships
The road race was held at Bonville on an undulating course with one major climb, the 660-metre ascent of Perry’s Hill.
The MMAS1-2 race saw Kevin Berkeley (Parramatta CC) take advantage of the uphill finish by punching away from sprinter Jordan Ross to take the MMAS2 crown.
Meanwhile the MMAS1s marked each other to decide their title and Christopher Ball (Manly Warringah CC) proved too strong in the sprint with Brendan Buhagiar able to claim a well earned bronze medal for his efforts.
In the WMAS1 race, Melanie Breaden contested the final sprint but was narrowly defeated by Pip Ash (Tamworth CC) in a terrific battle.
NSW Masters Criterium Championships
On Sunday, the Coffs Harbour CBD was the venue for the criterium and there was fast-paced action around every corner.
Melanie Breaden was first tricolour to attack the course and in the WMAS1-4 race the pace was on as soon as the pedals began turning. In an aggressively ridden race, the lead pack of 10 would remain together until just before the final lap when a determined long-range attack by hometown rider Laurelea Moss lit the fuse for an exciting finish. She was just overhauled on the line by Renee Heinrich (Dulwich Hill BC) who won the overall event in a bunch sprint but Melanie Breaden finished 3 seconds back to claim 2nd in the WMAS1 division.
In the final event of the championships, Dhuez Racing was able to play a dominant role in another high-paced affair with Mick Curran providing a expert lead-out for Jordan Ross who unleashed an trademark sprint that put the MMAS2 result beyond doubt and gave them both time to celebrate as they crossed the line in 1st and 3rd.
