Recap: Erik Mather Colnago Cup 2018

The 2018 Erik Mather Colnago Cup was held by Waratah Masters Cycling Club at the Sydney Dragway on 2nd April.

Dhuez Racing sent 4 riders to contest the Division 1 race and commence their Masters campaign for 2018.

Dhuez Racing set out with a plan to exert control over the race and some massive efforts by Johnathan Millington and Christian Godyn ensured that the pace stayed high as they continually attempted to break off the front on the tight and twisty circuit.

As the race developed, this two-pronged DRT attack whittled down the field as riders dropped off the back of the peloton and were eliminated.

Without the pressure of chasing down his fellow DRT riders, Ben Neppl was afforded the opportunity to ride a controlled race and he marshalled other likely contenders for the race until the final stages. The high-speed up front meant that there was no decisive break and as the bunch approached the finishline DRT remained in a solid position.

However, around the final technical bends Luke Cridland (St George CC) made a decisive move to win the race and set-up a mini break on the field. With no-one else seemingly willing to chase, Ben Neppl was forced to sprint after the lone leader and although he sustained his effort for the final 300m, he inevitably dragged the peloton with him and was nabbed for 2nd on the line by Simon Ball (Marconi CC).

It was a very positive result for the Dhuez Racing Team who again performed as a tight unit and rode to a plan but also showed the necessary intelligence to adapt to dynamic changes in the race. Johnathan rode a fantastic race as the team captain and a podium finish for Ben was thoroughly deserved. #StrongerThanOne
